Storage conditions

Environmental conditions such as heat, UV light, moisture and high humidity can change the properties of the polyethylene masking films after just a short time. Depending on the type of film, they can result in the film becoming brittle or cause problems during removal. As a result, PLEXIGLAS® sheets should be stored indoors at a temperature of 15-20 °C and be protected from UV light and moisture, e.g. with a PE film cover. Additional covers must be provided for outdoor storage.

Removing the masking film

If possible, you should leave the masking film on the PLEXIGLAS® sheet during processing to protect the material during routing, sawing, or drilling; only for a few processing steps, such as forming, should the film first be removed.

To remove the masking film, first loosen the film at each corner. Then carefully pull the film from the corners toward the middle of the sheet, forming a kind of pouch. This has the advantage that most of the dirt and dust remain on the film and so do not soil the material. Finally, pull the film off the sheet completely.

Cleaning and maintenance

Never rub the PLEXIGLAS® sheets when dry. This results in the material becoming electrostatically charged, which in turn attracts dust. It may also result in scratches on the surface. In most cases, all it takes to remove light soiling is some lukewarm water and a soft, lint-free cloth or a sponge. In case of heavier soiling, for example with greasy substances, PLEXIGLAS® sheets should be cleaned with an intensive plastic cleaner. You can also use benzene-free petroleum ether or isopropanol. Make sure that the cleaning agent does not contain any benzene, ethanol, alcohol, organic material or thinners, which can damage the material in the same way as sharp objects.

Recycling PLEXIGLAS® sheets

PLEXIGLAS® semi-finished products can be easily recycled without any problems. The material is not special waste and can be easily recycled by the end users through national waste disposal companies or in household waste. Alternatively, specialist disposal companies can reintegrate all PLEXIGLAS® cuttings generated during processing by specialist processors into a useful cycle. That is because PLEXIGLAS® sheets can easily be recycled and, with suitable processes, even be broken down into their original components to create new PLEXIGLAS® products.

Recycling masking films

PLEXIGLAS® masking films are usually made from polyethylene (PE), unless explicitly stated otherwise in the product description. PE films are easy to recycle, provided they are carefully separated from other types of plastic. Where recycling is not possible, the masking films can be disposed of harmlessly in a household waste incineration plant or in landfill.1)

1) PE can be landfilled “without harm” to the environment because it decomposes within a foreseeable period upon exposure to the weather, giving rise to non-toxic oxidation products.

The Ü mark

The conformity mark (the “Ü-Zeichen” in Germany) indicates that a construction product can be used in Germany. By labeling a construction product with the Ü-Zeichen, the manufacturer declares that it conforms to the Technical Building Regulations, the general building inspectorate approval, the general building inspectorate test certificate or case-by-case approval requirements.

PLEXIGLAS® extruded acrylic sheet according to ISO 7823-2 meets these requirements.

Service side

The color of colored extruded PLEXIGLAS® grades, including white sheets, may vary slightly from batch to batch. The reverse side of translucent or opaque colored solid sheets may differ slightly from the controlled service side, which is printed with the grade.
